Defense Industrial Base (DIB) organizations entrusted with Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) are mandated to implement robust cybersecurity measures. The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) framework, specifically CMMC Level 2, requires strict adherence to the 110 security practices outlined in NIST Special Publication 800-171 Revision 2. Our role as an Authorized C3PAO is to objectively assess an Organization Seeking Certification (OSC)'s implementation of these practices, ensuring the comprehensive protection of CUI and Federal Contract Information (FCI) within their information systems.

A fundamental component of achieving and maintaining NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2 compliance involves rigorous security assessments. This includes conducting regular vulnerability scanning (RA.L2-3.11.2) to identify system weaknesses and performing penetration testing (not an explicit NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2 requirement, but a common way to support CA.L2-3.12.1) to validate the effectiveness of implemented controls against simulated adversarial tactics. These practices are essential for an OSC to accurately identify deficiencies, prioritize remediation actions, and develop a comprehensive Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M) to address unfulfilled practices.

Effective protection of CUI necessitates a deliberate and secure cybersecurity architecture and engineering approach. This involves designing and configuring information systems in accordance with the NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2 control families, such as Access Control (AC), System and Communications Protection (SC), and Configuration Management (CM). Key practices include implementing least privilege (AC.L2-3.1.5), enforcing secure configurations (CM.L2-3.4.2), and protecting system boundaries (SC.L2-3.13.1). For DIB contractors utilizing cloud or hybrid environments, ensuring these practices are consistently applied and maintained across all CUI processing, storage, and transmission points is paramount.

Regardless of the technology employed, the core objective remains the protection of CUI. When DIB organizations utilize advanced analytics or artificial intelligence to process CUI, the underlying systems and data pipelines must conform to the same stringent NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2 requirements. This includes implementing encryption for CUI at rest and in transit (SC.L2-3.13.8, SC.L2-3.13.16), maintaining strict access controls (AC domain), ensuring robust audit and accountability (AU domain), and safeguarding the integrity of CUI through secure configurations and change control (CM domain). The focus is on the secure handling of CUI throughout its lifecycle within any information system.

Achieving CMMC Level 2 certification is a testament to an OSC's commitment to safeguarding national security information. Our role is to provide an impartial assessment of your adherence to NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2 practices. By systematically implementing and documenting these foundational security controls, DIB contractors can establish a mature and defensible cybersecurity posture, preparing them for the CMMC assessment process and ensuring the secure handling of CUI.
